I've watched the first part of a documentary about this guy on IPlayer.
I'm not a cycling fan so when I heard the news of his doping scandal I just assumed that he was a big fat cheat. Which he was and he admits.
But it becomes apparent that nearly everyone was and if he were to make a living (he'd already won a World Title without doping at 21), he'd have to jump on the bandwagon - which he did.
Yes, he's arrogant and a bit of a bully to his team mates but you need that single mindedness to dominate in a sport.

Let them use drugs i reckon, fuck all this nonsense of trying to stop it, it will never work.
The dope testing is getting ridiculous as are the lengths they go to hide the use, just last week I heard reports of some Aussie swimmers who may get stripped of there Olympic medals from 2012!!!! As they have re tested samples from the games and found minor traces of some banned substance, FFS!!!
I reckon they let athletes go for it if they want to get peak performance, stop all the doping testing etc and lets see how far we can push the human body when it comes to sport etc, they just all sign waivers that they accept the risk if it all back fires, they die or have abnormalities etc and end up with a shrivelled cock the size of an acorn, or female athletes develop piss flaps like saddlebags.

The problem with that, Sydney, is Bio Chemists would start to produce drugs more and more powerful which would turn Athletes into a super race.
They could also end up dead at 40. It's a fine balance

"A bit of a bully" is an understatement. The issue with Armstrong it's that he ran that team like a gang - if you refused to join in and take drugs, your career would be over.
Sure, the sport was rife with it, but he took it a few steps further away from getting clean.
Haven't watched the documentary yet though.

He was top of the chain at the time organising drug drops and amounts etc and have blood bags of others all hanging up in his hotel rooms.

How could you ever allow doping, Sydney?
A) Many of the drugs athletes take are illegal. The drugs are banned by certified bodies because they are a health hazard.
If the authorities allowed races where athletes took illegal drugs, the authorities would be condoning illegal activity. Not to mention they would be sued when athletes collapse
B) Suppose you allowed ‘legal’ drugs. Now, let’s say all long distance runners staring taking thyroxine to boost endurance. It would be highly risky to their health.
The authorities would be totally irresponsible to allow an event where people could die or end up in hospital.
C) Funding and sponsorship. How could advertisers and founders possible back an event putting lives at risk? The money would dry up.
When you think about it, it’s irresponsible and impossible to allow a race where scientists dope up the athletes. The argument that we should allow doping falls apart under scrutiny.

I doubt you will have the same feeling when you watch the second part.
What he did to the other riders and their families was atrocious. Basically a sustained campaign of threats, harassment and hate.
And all in the name of wanting to win. Its fucking sickening.

If youve taken banned drugs you should be disqualified
As I understand it the Aust swimmer was one of the alternates they used in an early heat as is the way where you save your best 4 for the final.
Would be harsh on the clean swimmers who swam and won the final to lose their medals but imagine thats what will happen as the entire heats and final is classed as one race even though its different swimmers.
There will obviously be a lot of this over the years as testing technology moves on.

I can understand the pressure athletes are out under to take drugs in sports like cycling when everyone knows everyone else is doing it. Doesn’t make it right, but if you’ve dedicated your life trying to become an alert competitor and then you get to that level only to find the only way to stand a chance is to do what everyone else is doing, it takes a very very strong willed person to walk away
However, Armstrong was one of the root causes of it in cycling, not a victim of it. By all accounts a nasty piece of work, a control freak and a bully. His only redeeming factors are that he raised awareness for testicular cancer and he’s raised a lot of money for charity. But he’s still an arse

Read David Hughes' book Seven Deadly Sins for an in-depth look at Armstrong, what he did and how it affected others.
Horrible bully. He knew exactly what he was doing and has shown no remorse nor offered any apologies for ruining people's careers.

The Secret Race co written by Tyler Hamilton is a proper eye opener on the doping culture back then.
Retrospective testing is the way forward with all this stuff. Most of eastern europe is getting popped for doping now, with the desperate aussies next. It's the best deterrent.
Whatever you say about the cunt Armstrong, Cycling is now one of the cleaner sports out there, partly because of the scandal caused by the prick and partly because all the shithouses of that era like Basso, Menchov, Vinikourov, Hincapie etc are retired or close to retirement. If I was WADA I'd be focussing my attention on fucking swimming and Tennis which are absolutely riddled.
